UofM Black Student Association embraces diversity through “Royal Renaissance” fashion show

The Black Student Association (BSA) at the University of Memphis presented a majestic celebration of black excellence and royalty with their latest event."The Royal Renaissance," a fashion show aimed to spotlight diversity, self-expression, and the beauty of black heritage on Feb. 18th in the UC Ballroom. The event captivated attendees with stunning displays of fashion and its significance in promoting diversity and cultural expression on campus.
Organized by Tranecia Suell and Laterrion Nwyolise, the fashion show featured models who are part of BSA,ranging from freshmen to seniors. Each model embodied a unique aspect of African American culture. The carefully curated outfits reflected personal style and cultural influences, highlighting the diversity and richness of black fashion. From bold statement pieces to subtle garments, each ensemble narrated a story of identity and belonging, representing a wide range of styles including streetwear, casual wear, and elegant attire.
Suell said, "We want to showcase how beautiful and creative our culture can be," a sentiment echoed throughout the evening as participants and attendees embraced the opportunity to celebrate their heritage through fashion.
BSA representatives emphasized their desire to display the beauty of their culture through fashion, stressing the importance of representation and inclusivity in the industry. The fashion show exemplified the rich influences shaping modern fashion, from traditional African prints to contemporary urban styles. Models highlighted the significance of artistic expression within the community, viewing fashion as a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment.
Among them, Omere Manirakiza, a children and families development studies major, shared his experiences and underscored the importance of celebrating different culturesthrough fashion, stating, "It's important to represent different cultures, and it's a way to create more art, more creativity, more diversity, and more unity."
Attendees, including students and faculty, were treated to many striking designs and cultural aesthetics, creating reactions of applause, cheers, and admiration throughout the show. Discussions about the cultural significance of the garments further reinforced the event's impact on fostering a sense of community and belonging on campus. Despite the absence of special guests and performances, attendees enjoyed an insightful behind-the-scenes film, offering a glimpse into the preparation process and featuring humorous interviews with the models.
